A Certain Magical Index is a popular light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi. It follows the story of a main character named Toma Kamijo, who possesses a unique ability called "Imagine Breaker." This power allows him to nullify any supernatural ability or magic with a mere touch of his right hand. Toma lives in Academy City, a technologically advanced city where students with supernatural abilities, referred to as Espers, attend school and hone their powers. Despite not having any sort of supernatural power himself, Toma finds himself involved in various conflicts and battles between different factions within the city. Throughout the series, Toma encounters numerous characters with their own unique abilities and magical powers.
Touma's ability is Imagine Breaker ("Illusion Killer"), an ability which negates all supernatural powers, including the effects of magical, psychic, and divine powers (which may also include his good luck and God's blessing according to Index). Because of this, the people testing psychic abilities cannot detect or classify his abilities, as such Aleister Crowley considers him neither a psychic nor a magician but rather a normal person with a unique ability. Touma is the current holder of the Imagine Breaker for the power believes that there is meaning in Touma have it in his right hand, or in Fiamma's own words: "the right hand is only the right hand when it is growing from his right shoulder." At first, the source of Imagine Breaker appeared to be his right hand only, but in later episodes, it is questionable that his power doesn't concentrate on one part of his body. It appears his right hand is the only part that can actively negate supernatural things, with the rest of the body immune to supernatural effects, like heat from Innocentius that can even melt metal door handles. Though this is still debatable, as Ars Magna can bypass Imagine Breaker and go straight into the brain to affect Touma's memories. Terra of the Left hints that Imagine Breaker might actually be an ability that might extend itself further away from its bearer's right hand, based on Terra's personal knowledge of Fiamma of the Right's Holy Right ability. Despite of the extents of Touma's abilities, Touma might not have the ability to negate all "artificial" supernatural abilities. Tsuchimikado is convinced that there are things that Touma's Imagine Breaker cannot destroy, including ley lines or a person's life force from which a magician's mana is produced. One explanation is that Touma hasn't killed someone through a simple handshake, a piece of evidence that suggests that Touma's ability might have certain limits to it.
After Fiamma s right arm was severed by Aleister, it was confirmed there is more to Touma s right hand than just a a right hand that can negate supernatural ability. The author s Afterword section also mentions a tantalizing hint on what the difference is between these two possible alternative translations of Touma s name, though in-universe none of the characters have noted the similarity as it is obviously in a different language.
Throughout the series, Toma encounters numerous characters with their own unique abilities and magical powers. These characters include Index Librorum Prohibitorum, a young nun who holds the knowledge of the 103,000 forbidden grimoires stored in her mind, as well as many other magicians, researchers, and Espers. As the story progresses, Toma learns more about the hidden secrets and conspiracies within Academy City.
Kamijou Touma
Kamijou Touma ( 上条 当麻 , Kamijō Tōma ? ) is the main protagonist of the Toaru Majutsu no Index series and an important character in the Toaru Kagaku no Railgun series. As a Level 0 Academy City first-year high school student, his point-of-view allows the audience to become acquainted to the mysterious world of Toaru Majutsu no Index, and is mostly involved in the events of its Magic Side.
He is a typical teenager with the usual angst and laid back attitude common for his age - this is apparent in the way he handles his guardianship of Index. In spite of being her guardian, albeit unofficially, he usually leaves Index to her own devices - often unprotected and often leaves her without an explanation which causes the latter to look for him and end up being in harm's way.
He possesses the mysterious "Imagine Breaker" in his right hand, which is capable of negating all forms of magic, esper powers, and other divine abilities. This, according to Index, even includes his own good luck, as they are the blessings of God. [8]
Because of his ability, he has been unwillingly dragged into a war between the several factions most notably between the two major churches. He lacks commitment to the role he has been thrust into and often lets his emotions get the best of him. This often results in someone close to him getting hurt first before he takes a decisive action.
He has a very strong desire to aid all those who are in need even if it means putting his life on the line and will not hesitate to challenge an opponent who is several times more powerful than himself. In spite of this, and the obvious disadvantage he is at compared to his opponents, he never really bothered on learning any offensive or defensive skills and merely relied on brute strength and the ability contained in his right hand. Because of his willingness to help others unconditionally, he has attracted the affections of many characters in the series, which Himegami Aisa jokes about, stating that his life is like a dating simulation where he is bound to unlock more paths to more girls. He often finds himself in dangerous situations, fighting against powerful enemies using only his wit, courage, and his Imagine Breaker ability. One of the main themes of A Certain Magical Index is the clash between science and magic. Academy City is a place where science and technology have advanced to a level where they can mimic magical abilities. This creates a divide between those who rely on science and those who rely on magic. 1. Jane - 2 stars - I found the main character in "A Certain Magical Index" to be incredibly annoying. He was constantly whining and complaining about everything, which made it difficult for me to root for him or even care about his mission. Additionally, his powers seemed to come out of nowhere and were never fully explained, making it hard to understand the world he was in. Overall, I was disappointed with the main character and it really hindered my enjoyment of the series.
2. Mark - 1 star - The main character in "A Certain Magical Index" was one of the most unlikeable protagonists I've come across. He was selfish, arrogant, and always relied on others to save him from difficult situations. It felt like he had no agency of his own and was constantly just being dragged along by the other characters. I wanted to see growth and development from him, but unfortunately, it never came. I was left frustrated and unable to connect with the story because of this.

He lacked any defining traits or characteristics that would make him stand out from other protagonists in similar series.
