Stevenson University Unveils New Mustang Statue
Victory has arrived at Stevenson University. The 12-foot-tall bronze mustang statue was unveiled Wednesday afternoon outside the entrance to Mustang Stadium on the Owings Mills Campus. The statue represents the strength and unity of the entire Stevenson University community and the spirit that drives everything from the institution’s growth to its championship athletic teams.
“This is a significant piece of art, Stevenson’s first,” said Claire Moore, Vice President for Student Affairs. “It is bronze, representing permancy, strength and endurance. Our mascot, the Mustang, symbolizes passion, energy, and independent spirit. These symbols help define us, and Victory fits Stevenson.”
The culmination of a yearlong project by nationally renowned wildlife sculptor Bart Walter, Wednesday’s ceremony was followed by a street fair with food, games, and giveaways to stir excitement for the Mustang men’s lacrosse team’s game against Messiah College. The Mustangs won the game 18-4.
The sculpture was funded by an anonymous challenge grant and the generous support of university Trustees, alumni, parents, and friends. A smaller replica of the sculpture will be installed within the stadium as a spur to Stevenson’s student-athletes as they take the field.
“Victory embodies this university’s history of achievement and serves as an inspiration for our future growth and success,” said Kevin Manning, Ph.D., President of Stevenson University. “This statue is for our entire community, from our faculty and staff, to our students, parents, and alumni. The sculpture represents the pride we all have in Stevenson and all we plan to accomplish in the future.”
In addition to football games, the USC Mustang also makes appearances at various events and parades throughout the year, further bolstering school spirit and generating excitement among the USC community. I was extremely disappointed with the USC Mustang Mascot. The costume itself looked cheap and poorly made, with the faux fur coming off in several areas. Additionally, the design of the mascot did not accurately represent a mustang in my opinion. It lacked the fierce and wild look that I associate with a mustang. Overall, I was unimpressed with the mascot and felt that it did not enhance the school spirit or atmosphere at USC games.

The USC Mustang Mascot was absolutely atrocious. It looked more like a cartoon character than an actual mustang. The proportions were all wrong, and the oversized head made it look ridiculous. USC should really consider reevaluating their choice of mascot as it does not reflect the pride and spirit of the university.
