Old Black Witch, the cantankerous magical practitioner who lived in the attic above the Jug and Muffin Tea-room run by Nicky and his mother, emerges in time to learn of a cake-making contest in the nearby village of Oldwick in this second picture-book devoted to her adventures. Making her own special nut cake, Old Black Witch enters the contest, only to witness Mrs. Butterbean, wife of the village's most affluent citizen, cheating by entering a coconut cake created by a professional baker. Enraged that anyone (other than herself) would cheat, our witchy heroine absconds with her rival's cake, eventually winning a polka-dotted ribbon for her own creation, which is judged most original.

Published in 1970, Old Witch and the Polka-Dot Ribbon is the second of three books about this New England witch, following upon The Old Black Witch and preceding Old Witch Rescues Halloween. Despite that fact, it is the last of the three that I have read. Long out of print, and not in my library system, I had to track it down via inter-library loan. I'm glad that I did, as I found the story here amusing - I appreciate the fact that Old Black Witch is never domesticated, never made too sweet - and the artwork entertaining, in a vintage, cartoon-like style. There is a recipe for the Old Black Witch's magic nut cake on the back of the book, should young readers want to try their hand at making one of their own. Recommended to anyone who had read and enjoyed the other books about this character, or to any child who enjoys witchy tales in general. ( )

Old witch and the polka dot ribbon

The villagers couldn't help but be intrigued by this enchanting sight. They would often stop in their tracks and watch as the old witch passed by, captivated by the beauty and mystery she exuded. However, the old witch seemed indifferent to the attention she received. She carried herself with an air of confidence, unperturbed by the whispers and stares of the villagers. Little did they know, the polka dot ribbon held a special power that made the old witch impervious to their judgment. One day, a curious young girl named Lily approached the old witch. She had always been fascinated by the polka dot ribbon and couldn't resist the urge to know more about it. With bravery, she mustered the courage to ask the old witch about the origin and significance of the ribbon. To Lily's surprise, the old witch smiled warmly and invited her into her humble cottage. The walls of the cottage were adorned with ancient artifacts and spell books, creating an atmosphere of mystery and intrigue. After pouring them both a cup of tea, the old witch began to recount the story behind the polka dot ribbon. She explained that the ribbon had been passed down through generations of witches in her family. It was said to possess the power to grant the wearer protection from harm and to bring good fortune. The polka dot pattern symbolized joy and optimism, warding off any negative forces that may come the wearer's way. As Lily listened to the old witch's tale, she couldn't help but feel a sense of admiration and respect for this misunderstood sorceress. The polka dot ribbon represented not only a physical ornament but also a symbol of strength, resilience, and self-acceptance. From that day on, Lily became a firm believer in the power of the polka dot ribbon and the old witch's wisdom. She shared the story with the other villagers, spreading a newfound appreciation for the enigmatic old witch and her vibrant accessory. The tale of the old witch and the polka dot ribbon reminds us that appearances can be deceiving. Sometimes, the things we deem strange or peculiar may hold great significance and beauty beyond our initial perceptions. It teaches us the importance of embracing individuality and celebrating uniqueness. In a world filled with judgment and prejudice, it is crucial to remember that everyone has their own story to tell. Just like the old witch and her polka dot ribbon, we too can find strength and magic in the most unexpected places..

Reviews for "The Witch's Fashion Statement: The Symbolism of the Polka Dot Ribbon"

1. Alex - 2 stars - I was really disappointed with "Old Witch and the Polka Dot Ribbon". I found the storyline to be confusing and lacking in substance. The characters were underdeveloped and I couldn't connect with any of them. The writing style felt choppy and disjointed, making it difficult to stay engaged in the story. Overall, I felt like there was a lot of potential for a great witch-themed book, but this one fell flat. I would not recommend it.
2. Sarah - 1 star - I cannot understand why "Old Witch and the Polka Dot Ribbon" has received positive reviews. In my opinion, it was a complete waste of time. The plot was predictable and uninspired, and the writing was subpar at best. The supposed twist towards the end was lackluster and didn't redeem the rest of the book. I struggled to finish it and found myself skimming through pages just to get to the end. I would advise readers to choose a different book if they're looking for a captivating witch story.
3. Jason - 2 stars - Unfortunately, "Old Witch and the Polka Dot Ribbon" did not live up to my expectations. The concept had potential, but the execution fell short. The pacing was slow, and the story seemed to drag on without much happening. The characters were one-dimensional and lacked depth, making it difficult to care about their journey. The dialogue felt forced and unnatural, which further detracted from my reading experience. Overall, I was disappointed and wouldn't recommend this book to others.
4. Emily - 3 stars - I have mixed feelings about "Old Witch and the Polka Dot Ribbon". While I appreciate the author's attempt to create a unique witch tale, I found the story to be lacking in originality. It followed many cliches and tropes commonly found in witch-themed books. Additionally, the pacing was uneven, with certain parts dragging on while others felt rushed. However, I did enjoy the descriptive language used to describe the magical elements of the story. Overall, it was an average read for me.
