Magic New York Debuts in the Fall Targeting New Markets

Following a year of uncertainty, New York is back—and so are trade shows. Though the future of both was up for debate just several months back, the aggressive development and distribution of Covid-19 vaccines has helped in the return to pre-pandemic normalcy.

Informa Markets, which organizes fashion trade events such as Project and Coterie, is betting big on the New York trade show scene with a new in-person event set to take place in the fall. Magic New York will debut Sept. 19-21 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and serve new and differentiated market segments, including women’s young contemporary, sportswear, trend, footwear, and children’s. It will take place alongside women’s apparel event Coterie New York and serve as an East Coast home for brands previously available at Fame, Moda, Children’s Club and Sole Commerce.

“Presenting a focused edition of our flagship Las Vegas event in a new, key market is part of our aim to generate more diverse avenues of connection and commerce for our community,” said Jordan Rudow, vice president of events at Magic. “While offering the same comprehensive selection of brands and categories previously showcased at our New York based events, Magic’s expansion and new home in the New York market will gather a larger cross-section of the industry, giving our buyers the ability to shop a wider selection of brands and at a variety of price points.”

Magic Las Vegas will be held on Aug. 9-11 at the Las Vegas Convention Center alongside men’s and women’s market event Project and sourcing and supply chain market event Sourcing at Magic.

This news follows Kingpins’ recent announcement that it will return to New York for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. It will be held on Dec. 6-7 at Pier 36, the river-side location that it has used since 2017. The event organizer opted for a New York show over its biannual Amsterdam event in October, which it just confirmed it will not be hosting in 2021.

Other in-person events are gearing up for an active summer and fall, with Liberty Fairs hosting a dual event with the resort show, Cabana, on July 10-12 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Munich Fabric Start and Bluezone will be held Aug. 31-Sept. 2, and Denim Premiere Vision will return to Milan Oct. 13-14. The roaming show will move to Berlin on May 17-18, 2022.

And as old shows return, new shows debut. Dual-gender apparel and accessories show Liberty Fairs is joining forces with men’s trade show, L.A. Men’s Market, to host a new Los Angeles event on Aug. 4-5 under the Liberty Fairs name.

More than 260 brands from around the world displayed at Magic during the three-day events — names like Chinese Laundry, Ceros Jeans, Lush Clothing, 1Sock2Sock, Sam Edelman, Vintage Havana and more — while retailers, including Target, Zappos, Bloomingdale’s, Amazon, Lulus, Urban Outfitters, Macy’s, Saks Off 5th and Neiman Marcus, in addition to a number of specialty boutiques, walked the convention center floors in search of the latest trends.
