In this paper, which is the first part of our inquiry on Syriac love charms, we analyze the charms of the recipe-type, while the second group will be studied separately in a forthcoming paper. The Old English translation of the Medicina de Quadrupedibus (MQ) belongs to the corpus of early medieval English materia medica. This small treatise brings together remedies for various diseases taken from parts of animals, often to be applied along with uttering a series of charms. Traditionally deemed as devoid of the originality that characterizes genuinely insular works of the same type as the Lacnunga and Bald's Laeceboc, MQ has not aroused particular interest among critics of early English medical lore, nor have the charms contained in it been object of close investigations. Nevertheless, the translation of these charms from Latin raises important linguistic and stylistic questions with regard to their reception and potential use. In this article I argue that the linguistic and rhythmic elements introduced in the Old English versions are recognizable as typically oral-formulaic and, consequently, suggest a rewriting based on their possible oral performance.
Download Free PDF View PDF Download Free PDF View PDFManuscript Ferguson MS 147, a fifteenth-century volume written in Middle English and housed in Glasgow University Library, contains a copy of the Antidotarium Nicholai, a sarum calendar and a medical compilation which includes medical recipes, prognostic texts, and healing charms. Our interest is placed on the charms in the medical recipe collection found in folios 63r-159v. Following earlier studies on the charm genre, we will characterise the medical charms found in Ferguson MS 147 from a linguistic standpoint. This touches upon the use of language and other technical features, such as the presence of code-switching, the use of specialised symbols and characters, and the terminology used by the scribe to refer to the genre, among others. Concerning textual tradition, we also aim to examine whether the healing charms present variation, even if small, with earlier described charms. From a methodological point of view, the comparison includes contrasting our material with other edited compilations of charms.
Magic practices of Syriac Christians 1 are represented mostly with handbooks (or codices) dating from the 18th to the 20th century. 2 Though to a lesser extent, Syriac charms are also found on such media as paper and leather scrolls and magic bowls. As argued by Saar, “research on primary sources relating to love magic from the Christian and the Islamic traditions is still in its infancy, like that of Jewish magic”. 3 Although this claim can be easily extrapolated to all Syriac magic texts, by this study we aim to fill the gap in the present knowledge of precisely the love charms found in the Syriac tradition.
