Spicy Haunts: Exploring the Fiery Nature of the Curse of Shadows and Thorns

By admin

The curse of shadows and thorns is indeed **spicy**. This enchantment, which can be found in various fantasy tales, adds a touch of danger and intrigue to any story. The curse typically involves a form of dark magic that surrounds a person or place with shadows and thorns, making it treacherous and difficult to navigate. **The main idea here is that the curse of shadows and thorns adds a spicy element to stories**. It increases tension and suspense, as characters must find a way to overcome the curse or face its consequences. The shadows and thorns create a sense of foreboding and adversity that the protagonists must battle through, adding an exciting and thrilling element to the narrative.

This review will not contain spoilers, but I will put my trigger warning up front.

There s a plethora of character growth happening with room for more in future books, which in my opinion is one of the most important things used the the writing craft. The first book is purely told from the POV of Elise, but the rest switch back and forth between Elise The Rogue Princess and Valen The Night Prince , so you get a clearer image of what s happening especially as the characters get separated at various times throughout the series.

I want to thank the author for sending me this book in preparation for an ARC of book 2, Court of Ice and Ash.

This review will not contain spoilers, but I will put my trigger warning up front.

***TRIGGER WARNING: Gore, violence, sexual content, and attempted rape.

This book is completely delectable! LJ Andrews is a master at world building, the characters are extremely well developed, and the plot. all I can say is juciey, juciey, juciey!

The details that went into the world building for this book were perfect. If you're someone who doesn't like that aspect of a book, push through it, because the plot is worth it. I'm someone who enjoys the little details and I feel like this book was hand crafted just for me. The beginning of the book could come off as moving a little slow, but that's only because everything is being set up.
The world and political climate our characters find themselves in. The bonds between characters. Feelings. Emotions. Desires. Everything is important to the plot and none of it is wasted. So if you don't have patience for that kind of thing, just push past it because the plot, I promise, is worth it.

The characters themselves. no cookie cutter characters here. Everyone is unique. Our perfect princess. not so perfect, but then that makes her the perfect character. There's a plethora of character growth happening with room for more in future books, which in my opinion is one of the most important things used the the writing craft. There's plenty of mystery surrounding all of the characters and it will keep you guessing as to everyone's intentions. Who's playing who and why? What are they trying to achieve? But it's so subtle, most of the time, that you won't even think to question yourself about it. There is a parade of swoon-worthy men, with a few not so swoon-worthy ones thrown in for flavor. Just be careful about which ones you fall for.

The plot. I will reveal nothing. It's amazing. It's better than watching Game of Thrones. (I say watching because I haven't read those books. yet.) This book made me feel things. Both things that the characters themselves felt, but it also made me feel for them. I laughed, I cried, a merry time was had.
It's left open for book 2, which I've already started at the time I'm writing this and I can't wait to see what is in store for these beloved characters.

I don't believe this is spoiler because of the banner currently up on Amazon at the time of this writing which declares this as a Beauty and the Beast tale. The beast is truly gruesome. It makes the beast in Beauty and the Beast look like a cute little cupcake.
This book has some dark themes, but books would be boring if they were all sunshine and roses. We all need some shadows to enjoy the sunshine and a few thorns to protect our roses.

I can't say enough about how incredible this book is. It's the full package and it belongs up there with the greats of today's fantasy. I'm hopeful and excited for this series.

I do want to address the Trigger Warning I put in at the top. Yes, it's in the book and it happens on the page, but it doesn't get to THAT extent. And the author does handle the issue with upmost care and respect. (It is not something that is put in the book needlessly or carelessly.) Use care in deciding if you are up for reading that scene. (And it is one scene and not a reaccuring theme.)

I always rate my book using the same system as movies.
This book will receive an R-rating for the following: Violence, gore, sexual content, and attempted rape.
This book also contains, but not necessarily at an R-rated level: a small amount of language.

I recommend this book to mature adults (18+) who enjoy some romance with their fantasy and don't mind a few darker elements.
