Examining the Role of the Curse Series within the World of Tate no Yuusha

By admin

The Curse series in the Japanese light novel and manga series "Tate no Yuusha no Nariagari" (also known as "The Rising of the Shield Hero") plays a significant role in the story and the development of the main characters. In the "Tate no Yuusha" universe, the Curse series is a unique set of legendary weapons that are infused with powerful curses. These curses are often referred to as "Waves" and are administered by the Wave creatures that appear periodically to threaten the world. The Curse series is composed of four different weapons, each corresponding to one of the four Cardinal Heroes: the Shield Hero, the Sword Hero, the Spear Hero, and the Bow Hero. The Curse series is notorious for its negative effects, such as draining the Hero's life force, causing pain, or inducing mental and emotional distress. However, these curses can also provide unique abilities and immense power when harnessed correctly.

The swordsman, Ren, once overlapped the game he played with this world, and as a result of acting with a gaming mindset, he brought about a tragedy. Despite losing everything, he still holds onto an unyielding wish. Seeking even greater power, Ren attacks Naofumi and Motoyasu, but this time, Ren manages to inflict harm on Naofumi with a technique akin to Shield of Wrath's Iron Maiden. Raphtalia, alerted by Raph-chan, rushes to the scene to lend assistance.

So do all the Cardinal Heroes possess weapons infused with Cursed Series, or is it exclusive to Naofumi? It seems that some, like Ren, can even have multiple types in a single weapon, as evidenced by his Greed and Gluttony. Is Motoyasu's spear from this episode also a part of the Cursed Series? Despite Motoyasu's comedic nature this week, he surprisingly managed to eliminate the two adversaries, showcasing an unexpected level of competence when following Naofumi's guidance.

poor ren, but it looks like they all got curses, i wonder if spear hero's is pride and lust. it looks like we're finally making friends but i wonder if that town will accept him. what they did to him is unforgivable.

Ren's backstory and his point of view are something that only receives depth in the anime, as the LN is in first person from Naofumi's point of view, so even for me it was something new.

For this episode, I wish they had given more screen time to the Gluttony Series, showing its strength even though the result in the end is the same. Motoyasu's Lust Series as well, as he doesn't use Temptation here.

I Dont know why!! But this episode was really satisfying. Maybe because Ren got sucker punched by reality or maybe because we got to see him struggle to reach to a point where he understands that all this time, Naofumi was only looking out for him out of experience with Malty!! Whatever it is, I'm really glad he is back on track and the Spear hero and Sword hero are in same page (kinda) with the shield hero.

Same as Motoyasu, when Ren tried to fight against the Spirit Tortoise, he failed spectacularly, and ended up being manipulated the same in the Spear Hero's shoes by Myne. It's no surprise that Naofumi laid waste to Ren's ideals of not seeing the reality that was in front of him, and it did not take until Myne to steal his valuables to ensure that he has to face reality, as such with her cahoots with high-level mages, the same as Naofumi did. Essentially, the Cardinal Heroes are all useless, all except for Naofumi, as enemies chase Ren's back endlessly, with both ordinary people and adventurers mocking him, before he took over a new identity as a masked man.

That's how the Cardinal Heroes have gotten themselves facing against each other with Motoyasu and Ren, who has the Curse series inflicted on himself for greater power, which Naofumi knows all too well. But Ren has gone too deep of being a vagrant bandit, so much for Naofumi and his party to start restricting Ren before all hell broke loose for him. Especially for Eclair, her wanting to duel with Ren is a testament to her strength and skill, forcing Ren to come out of his shell. And at the very least, Ren's Greed and Gluttony Curse in tandem to Naofumi's Wrath, it's like the 7 Deadly Sins, and she forced him out of his curse. While the same assassins came back to fight them, Motoyasu was swift, and his burst of strength taught from Naofumi, indeed made him stronger.

Who are all these kids? Why are there so many of them? Are they all the freed slaves? Where are the adults?

Who is the pink haired knight women? Did I just straight up forget about her?

The MCs party seems to be cursed, did that happen in S2? Is the glitched stat window Naofumi sees part of that?

What is all that talk about heroes from other worlds? I thought that got resolved last season?

Why are the random NPCs we sae in EP5 so strong and why do they know about other worlds?

Why are the other cardinal heroes common thugs now? Ren beeing a bandit, spear guy beeing a stalking lolicon.. dont they have a job to do?

- Éclair was introduced in season 2, but you're justified in not remembering her. She is the daughter of the lord of the lands Raphtalia's village was in, but her father was also killed during the First Wave. The village is now Naofumi's jurisdiction, but she is also responsible.

- The curse part is. Complicated. Naofumi, Raphtalia and Filo are cursed when Naofumi uses a very strong buff magic with the power of the Shield of Wrath during the battle with Kyo so that they can beat him. The effects of the curse are still active, reducing their stats.
The problem is: as far as I remember, this occurs in the novel and manga, but not in the anime, as Naofumi and Kyo's battle is reduced to a clash of lasers.

- About Heroes from Another World: Rising of Shield Hero will now explore his own multiverse. There are other worlds with other heroes, besides the world that Glass and L'Arc came from. S'yne is from another world that has already been destroyed.

- Random NPCs just look like random NPCs. The truth is that they are part of a group whose goal is to destroy other worlds and become stronger from it. His overpower abilities are the result of this.

Is that curse so unimportant to Naofumi that he didn’t directly started to search how to dispel it after Raphtalia got so lucky that NPC removed it for them? To me that seems like most illogical thing that Naofumi would do as he is always cautious and prepares a lot before everything

I had the same questions as the OP did. This post and the explanations in it might actually be the most informative, easy to follow and concise post I've ever read in the 10+ years I've been on MAL. Thank you for this and now it makes trying to follow things, instead of rewatching S1 and S2, way easier.
No I don't read manga. Why? Because according to MAL manga readers, all anime is either: too rushed, too slow, anime original, or a terrible adaption. I like to enjoy anime for what it is, anime.

The Rising of the Shield Hero Episode 4 Recap.

Whew! What a rollercoaster this episode was! But before we go on, I’d like to give out two awards to two very important people.

Myne/Malty: Winner for B*tch of the Season.

I wanted to make it B*tch of the Year but there’s more anime coming up and some other character might surprise me. I usually try not to curse in my posts but, man oh man, sometimes you can’t avoid it.

Motoyasu Kitamura: Winner for A*shole of the Season.

Victory is yours, Motoyasu, for being an a*shole that is. It was a tie between “A*shole of the Season” and “Most Delusional” but the delusional one went to Daisuke from ‘Revisions’.

The episode starts with a banquet being held in honour of the heroes’ victory against the Wave. Naofumi attends very reluctantly because of the reward (relatable). In the middle of it all, Malty decides to play Chinese Whisper and tells Motoyasu that Raphtalia is being held as a slave against her will and he challenges Naofumi to a duel. If he wins, Raphtalia goes free and if Naofumi wins, things will stay as they are. Naofumi brushes it off and Raphtalia tries to clear things up but they twist her words and gag her. Because that’s so much better compared to how Naofumi allegedly treats her (eye-roll).

This forces Naofumi’s hand and the two duel. It is evident that Naofumi has the upper hand and I absolutely love how Naofumi owns his ‘villain’ personality. the highlight of the fight, for me, was when Naofumi uses the balloon monsters against Motoyasu. I couldn’t stop laughing at how bewildered and flustered Motoyasu became!

Naofumi owning the fight. Shield Hero Secret Skill: Balloon Monster Attack.

And of course, no one could bear to see the Shield Hero win so Myne ‘helps’ by using her magic against Naofumi. This allows Motoyasu to pin down Naofumi and his win is declared. Naofumi protests but soon learns that the duel was all staged. Myne is the King’s daughter and the entire duel was set up so he would lose. Raphtalia’s slave seal is removed and Naofumi falls into despair. Pretty early for a downward spiral moment buuuuut I’m not mad about it.

But, above all ladies and gentlemen, the Curse Shield is now unlocked.

Though before anything bad happens, Raphtalia slaps Motoyasu! Ah, that was so satisfying, I was hoping it’d be a bit louder but *sigh* I’ll take it.

Raphtalia is a BAMF.

Raphtalia then goes on to ask if Motoyasu would be able to do the same things Naofumi has done for her. If he’s capable of taking in a sick demi-human, feeding them, nursing them and protecting them?

Motoyasu stutters his affirmation and Raphtalia then asks him that if that’s the case, why doesn’t he have any slaves in his party. Motoyasu, the bumbling idiot, is unable to answer her. Ren and Itsuki interfere and confirm that Myne indeed cheated and that the fight was Motoyasu’s loss.

Raphtalia then goes to Naofumi and reassures him that she’s loyal to him and even if the world is against him, she’ll tell them of how kind Naofumi was to her. The Cursed Shield then calms down and Naofumi finally sees Raphtalia as a grown demi-human. He is also able to taste again and enjoys a sandwich made by Raphtalia as she encourages both of them to do their best!

I found the "Curse series tate no yuusha" to be quite disappointing. The plot was confusing and lacked depth. The characters were one-dimensional and unlikable. The plot twists felt forced and didn't add anything meaningful to the overall narrative. I struggled to find any redeeming qualities in this series and would not recommend it to anyone seeking a captivating anime experience.
