In the timeless classic film, The Wizard of Oz, one of the most memorable characters is the Wicked Witch of the West. Known for her green skin, long black gown, and broomstick, she is a true icon of villainy. In one scene, the witch breaks out into song, further solidifying her place in cinematic history. The song sung by the Witch in The Wizard of Oz is titled "Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead." It is a lively and catchy tune that underscores the joy felt by the Munchkins and the other characters upon the witch's demise. In the song, the Witch is portrayed as the embodiment of evil, with lyrics depicting how her reign of terror has finally ended.

It’s the best month of the year! When I embarked on my Yearlong Celebration of Things I Love About Art back in January, I had no detailed plan. As usual, I was impulsive - I just dove in and I’m glad I did - it’s been a fun year researching and sharing. By May or June, I decided to plan out the remainder of the year - what months should celebrate what? For some reason I felt beholden to technical categories, as though I had to put a teacher hat on. I felt a bit boxed in but then realized…“This should be what I, Rebecca Green, love about art…otherwise why I am writing it?!” I have to constantly remind myself of my own freedom to decide (which is not uncommon amongst artists.) Like WAIT….what do I actually like? I decided to explore tactile things, stop motions sets, and this month, something I love almost more than anything…AUTUMN. As a child, I loved coloring in Halloween coloring books, reading Clifford’s Halloween, and 30 some years later I still swoon seeing spooky illustrations in picture books. For example, have you seen anything more charming than say, these witches from Adrienne Adams?

As Pierandrea Mattioli, a botanist physician of the time, wrote in 1548, the dose to be used depended on the desired effect one drachma of belladonna for slight frivolity, two drachmas for more levity, and three drachmas for prolonged madness, although it could lead to death. To be honest with you, I d have loved to have had princess dresses every day, high hairdos, attended balls But when you delve into historical realities and their beauty standards you re sometimes disappointed.
