The 13th Witch - Mark Hayden - rough start to the series for me

This series was recommended to me by a coworker, but I am having a tough time starting it. I picked it up on Audible, and the author's website lists this as the very first book to read, but there is so much backstory the author is leaving out that it is getting a little distracting. I really feel like I'm picking up the story half way through. I've already gone back and listened to the first 5 chapters (3) times, thinking that I was zoning out during my commute, and missing actual plot points.

Audible doesn't list any of the author's other works, just the 7 books in the Kings Watch series.

I don't mind how choppy and disconnected it is starting out, but I have been warned that the books that flesh out the main character's origins (a trilogy called The Jigsaw books: A Piece of Blue Sky, Green for Danger, In the Red Corner) are not fantasy at all, but are thriller/military drama, and that they are not really worth reading. My coworker said she didn't even finish 1 of those books.

Has anyone read the other books by this author to give any credence to that? Just a few chapters in, and I like the writing, character development, setting (and I might have found another worthwhile Narrator to add, Ciaran Saward ). I would love to know more about the main characters and the events that take place literally minutes before The 13th Witch starts, but if the books are marginal I know I am not going to have the will power to actually read them. I can forgive a lot with a mediocre audio book, but I have no patience for that if I am just sitting still and reading.
