We originally intended for this to be a Halloween Squishable, but, well, here we are. Thank you! Unexpected! Anyway. here's a massive version! A full armfull of well-timed spookiness. Here's the description!
Medieval plague doctors thought the smelly herbs and flowers they stuffed in their masks would keep them healthy. They didn't. But their impenetrable (and spooky!) leather outfits actually did! That coat was like the hazmat suit of their day. Today we have soap, so unless you particularly like wearing a lot of leather, maybe just wash your hands instead. Actually, wash your hands either way. Now wash them again.
Please be aware, there may be some variation in the glow-in-the-dark color of the lantern!

Plague doctors had a mixed reputation, with some citizens seeing their presence as a warning to leave the area. Some plague doctors were said to charge patients and their families additional fees for special treatments or false cures. In many cases these doctors were not experienced physicians or surgeons; instead, being volunteers, second-rate doctors, or young doctors just starting a career. Plague doctors rarely cured patients; instead serving to record death tolls and the number of infected people for demographic purposes.

The plague doctor's main task, in addition to treating people suffering from the plague, was to compile public records of plague deaths. Plague doctors became witnesses to countless wills during plague epidemics and advised their patients on their conduct before death. This advice varied from patient to patient and, after the Middle Ages, the nature of the relationship between doctor and patient was governed by an increasingly complex code of ethics. Costume of the Plague Doctor A typical costume consists of an ankle-length coat and a beak mask, usually filled with a sweet or strongly scented substance (usually lavender), as well as gloves, boots, a wide-brimmed hat and an outer garment costume. A typical mask has glass openings for the eyes and a curved beak, shaped like a bird's beak, with straps to hold the beak in front of the doctor's nose. The mask has two small nostrils and is a breathing apparatus containing aromatic substances. The beak could hold dried flowers, herbs, camphor or vinegar sponges, as well as juniper berries, ambergris, cloves, laudanum, myrrh and storax. the purpose of the mask was to prevent the foul odour, known as miasma, which was thought to be the main cause of the disease. The doctors believed that these herbs could combat the 'stench' of the plague and prevent them from becoming infected. Wide-brimmed leather hats indicated their profession, and they used wooden canes to point out areas that needed attention and to examine patients without touching them. The cane was also used to keep people away and to undress without touching the victims of the plague. The history of the plague doctor According to Michel Tibayrenc's Encyclopaedia of Infectious Diseases, the iconic plague doctor was first mentioned in the written writings of Charles de Lorme, the royal physician then in the service of King Louis XIII of France, during the outbreak of the plague in Paris in 1619. After De Lorme, the German engraver Gerhart Altzenbach published a famous illustration in 1656 on which the publisher Paulus Fürst based his iconic Dr Schnabel von Romm. In this satirical work, Fürst describes how doctors do nothing but terrorise people and take money from the dead and dying. The plague doctor's costume is first mentioned by Charles de L'Orme, physician to King Louis XIII of France, who, writing about the 1619 plague outbreak in Paris, developed a costume made of Moroccan goat leather that included boots, breeches, a long coat, hat and gloves imitating a soldier's canvas robe from neck to ankle. The garment is impregnated with an aromatic substance similar to that of a mask. L'Orme writes that the mask had a "nose half a foot long, shaped like a beak, full of perfume, with only two holes, one on each side near the nostrils, but large enough to breathe and carry the impression that the air the man breathed was further enclosed in the beak by drugs".

Reviews for "Meet the Newest Member of the Squishmallow Family: The Adorable Witch Doctor"

1. Megan - 1/5 - I was really disappointed with the Squishmallow witch doctor. Firstly, the design is quite creepy with its oversized head and strange accessories. It definitely does not have the cute and lovable appearance that other Squishmallows have. Secondly, the material is not as soft and luxurious as I expected. It feels more like a cheap knockoff rather than a high-quality plush toy. Overall, I would not recommend this particular Squishmallow to anyone who is looking for something cute and cuddly.
2. Thomas - 2/5 - The Squishmallow witch doctor did not meet my expectations. While the concept of having a witch doctor as a Squishmallow seemed interesting, the execution was lacking. The stitching on mine was poor, causing it to come apart at the seams after just a few days of use. Additionally, the material was not as squishy as I would have liked, making it less enjoyable to hug and cuddle. I think there are much better options available within the Squishmallow range, so I would suggest exploring those instead.
3. Jessica - 2/5 - I have always loved Squishmallows, but the witch doctor variant was a miss for me. The color combination of the plush was not appealing, and it did not match well with other Squishmallows in my collection. The size was also noticeably smaller than other Squishmallows, making it feel less substantial. The witch doctor accessories were a bit too gimmicky for my taste and took away from the overall cuteness factor. I would advise considering other Squishmallow designs before settling for the witch doctor.
