Magic shaving powder is a popular product used by many individuals for hair removal. One notable aspect of this product is its distinctive smell. The smell of magic shaving powder can be described as a combination of various scents. It has a slightly chemical and medicinal scent, similar to that of an antiseptic solution. Some people also describe the smell as earthy and slightly herbal, reminiscent of certain plant extracts. The strong smell of magic shaving powder is mainly due to the ingredients used in its formulation.

The strong smell of magic shaving powder is mainly due to the ingredients used in its formulation. This product typically contains chemicals such as calcium thioglycolate, which is responsible for breaking down the protein structure of hair. Additionally, it may contain fragrances and other additives to mask the harsh smell of the chemical compounds.

Has anyone ever used a product called "Magic Shaving Powder"?

I am just curious about this product. I know you don't need a razor and brush but I worked with a guy a while back who used this stuff and he always had a face so clean and clear that it made me very curious about this product.

P.S. please feel free to move this post if needed.

Not Much. its not really a shave powder as such, more like a chemical treatment.

Ah, the romance of shaving via chemical treatment. It comes in two scents: Noxious Sulfur and Lavender.

I actually used Nair on my thigh one time just to test it out. Every single hair folicle turned into a red bump. I'd hate to see this on my face.

The original formula stinks to high heaven. I remember my father using the original formula and being force to shaved in the back yard due to it's smell. Some of the other formulas smell a little better.

In my quest to end PFB, I tried this stuff for a few years. You have to be extremely careful with how long you leave it on, or you will suffer from some serious chemical burns.

In college my friend tried to use this stuff. He read the instructions which said to leave on for 5 - 7 minutes. He applied it and waited 5 - 7 minutes, big mistake. He did not take into consideration the time it took him to apply it. He burned a nice layer of skin off, and sported a scalped beard area.

This also doesn't like sweat, your face has to be dry. They also tell you not to wash your face before hand. Oh yeah and don't even think about using alcohol or alcohol based product before or after using this stuff. I still have a two cans of this stuff. Man! I never throw stuff away! Be happy that you can use a blade.

Well, in all fairness to this product, it does work well if you follow the timing guidelines, and your skin can handle the chemicals. The chemicals perform a mild form of exfoliation. However, this is definitley not a product for stupid people.

Let's see what it says:

DO NOT USE THIS PRODUCT WITH A RAZOR
Caution: Contains thioglycolate. Follow directions carefully.
This product may cause skin irritation. If skin is inflamed or has
skin abrasions, facial sores or pustules., consult a dermatologist
before using this product.

* Wait 36 hours before using a razor, shaving product or device.
* Do not use after perspiring heavily. Do not wash face before use.
* Do not use after prolonged sun exposure.
* Do not use with any after-shave product containing alcohol.
* Timing is crucial to avoid excessive irritation. For external use only.
If power or the mixture gets into eyes, rinse repeatedly, with water.
Magic Shaving Powder is used only to remove facial hair, Keep away
from children

themba,
The way you've described the Magic Shaving Powder, especially the original formula, I'm at a loss as to why more of us have not switched from our DE razors to this.

Although for anyone interested I will gladly take your gently used DE's off your hands and ship a couple of these to your home, on me. PM me if interested.

Seriosly though, this should have a stupid human warning on it.

I've used it before also. Another drawback to it is that it can't be used every day. Marty J Posts: 90 Joined: Thu Apr 06, 2006 6:06 pm Location: County Down, Northern Ireland

Ingredient breakdown for those interested:

Corn Starch Zea Mays is basic corn starch.

Calcium Carbonate is a calcium antacid. it is generally made from seashells and snail shells. Found in rocks.

Barium Sulfide is a depilatory. This is the same ingredient that makes products like Nair work.

Calcium Hydroxide is an acid neutralizer. Think Tums.

Ammonium thioglycolate is also called perm salt. It is used in perm applications to swell the hair so the perm solution may penetrate. In shaving, the swelled hair is easier to shave.

Personally, this sounds a little too dangerous and bothersome to make me give up a great soap or cream.

💪 Extra Strength Red Magic Shaving Powder - 5 oz (Pack of 3) Review

To be honest I would only recommend this product if you absolutely hate shaving. This works well, but the next day the hair has grown back a bit, so not the best alternative to daily shaving. The smell is bearable but still very eggy. It didn't irritate my skin and my skin is very sensitive.

Reviews for "The science of scent: deconstructing the magical aroma of shaving powder"

1. Amber - 2 stars
I was really excited to try Magic shaving powder after reading all the positive reviews, but I was extremely disappointed with the smell. It was very overpowering and had a strong chemical scent that lingered even after rinsing it off. It made the whole bathroom smell for hours, and I couldn't stand being in there. I had to open all the windows and light scented candles just to get rid of the smell. I personally cannot recommend this product to anyone who is sensitive to strong smells or simply dislikes them.
2. Greg - 1 star
The smell of the Magic shaving powder is absolutely awful! It is a strange combination of chemicals that made me feel nauseous the moment I opened the container. I tried to get past the smell and still give it a chance, but unfortunately, it was just too overwhelming for me. Even after I washed it off, the scent seemed to linger on my skin for hours. I had to shower multiple times just to get rid of it. I regret purchasing this product and will definitely be looking for a different alternative next time.
3. Sarah - 3 stars
While I didn't hate the smell of the Magic shaving powder, I found it to be quite strong and unpleasant. It reminded me of a cheap, generic cleaning product rather than something I would want to apply to my skin. The scent was so overpowering that it made the whole shaving experience less enjoyable. I understand that the product may be effective, but I just cannot get past the smell. I wish they would work on improving the fragrance or offer unscented options for those of us who are sensitive to strong odors.
