Behold Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters: A Unique Twist on a Classic Fairy Tale Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters is a thrilling and action-packed film that takes a beloved fairy tale and turns it into an epic adventure. Released in 2013, this movie takes place 15 years after the original story, where Hansel and Gretel killed the witch that tried to eat them in their childhood. In this reimagining, Hansel and Gretel have become professional witch hunters, dedicating their lives to eradicating witches from the world. The siblings are portrayed as fiercely skilled warriors, equipped with an array of deadly weapons and impressive combat skills. The story takes a darker tone than the original fairy tale, exploring themes of revenge, survival, and redemption. Hansel and Gretel's journey is filled with intense action sequences and thrilling battles against powerful witches.

It’s unquestionably a dumb movie, and some of the acting is terrible, but H&G:WH has a lot going for it. For one thing, it takes its premise serious enough and still manages to be tongue-in-cheek; there’s nothing more frustrating that a movie with a cute/meta premise that then keeps winking at the audience every few seconds. Another plus: the movie was ridiculously gory. And one more aspect I really loved: there were a lot of practical make-up effects. There’s a troll in this movie that’s literally a guy in a giant troll costume! In a day and age when most films would create this character entirely through unconvincing CGI, you’ve gotta love that a little. Also, I never mind watching Gemma Arterton on screen for two hours.

Instead of bread crumbs, the now-grown pair are leaving trails of blood in the woods, as they hunt down witches spoiler alert following their youthful run-in with the candy architect with a mean streak. It seems like the big hold-out for the film would be Renner, who is attached to nearly every film franchise at this point, from Avengers to Mission Impossible to the Bourne films.
