Guillermo del Toro was originally attached to direct, and it’s a major loss that he will only be producing on the project. Then there is the Zemeckis of it all: As much as I love Back to the Future, Zemeckis hasn’t made a decent film since Forrest Gump. As his passion for cutting edge technology and VFX grows, he seems to have lost the original storytelling magic that made his earlier films so iconic.

The book follows the adventures of Luke, a seven-year old boy who encounters a convention of witches while on vacation with his grandmother, and is turned into a mouse by the witches. 22, The Witches came under criticism for its depiction of limb difference this week from individuals including Paralympian Amy Marren, actress Melissa Johns, and writer-director Ashley Eakin, and organizations including the Lucky Fin Project, Reach, and Changing Faces.

Anne Hathaway’s The Witches Flies Away From Theaters to HBO Max

HBO Max’s latest offering to the demigods of spooky season has arrived. According to Deadline, the streamer will be the new home of Robert Zemeckis’s adaptation of The Witches, a fresh take on the Roald Dahl classic. Watch a teaser for the film below. The Warner Bros. film was originally slated to hit theaters this year, but was held back after the pandemic dashed the futures of most theatrical releases, save for too-big-to-fail hopefuls like Tenet and the forthcoming James Bond movie No Time to Die.

The Witches stars Anne Hathaway as, you guessed it, the Grand High Witch, a wicked ruler with an evil plot up her sleeve. The role was famously played by Anjelica Huston in Nicolas Roeg’s 1990 version of the film. Aside from Hathaway, Zemeckis’s version also stars Stanley Tucci, Octavia Spencer, and Chris Rock, was cowritten by Zemeckis, Kenya Barris, and Guillermo del Toro, and was coproduced by Alfonso Cuarón; a stealthy embarrassment of riches.

The film had all the muscle to turn out a strong theatrical performance this October. It had been schedule to hit theaters October 16, but was reshuffled after the pandemic struck in March. Theaters were subsequently shuttered for months until August, when chains like AMC and Regal began robust reopening plans.

Switching to HBO Max is, at this point, perhaps the next best thing for the film. As Deadline notes, the streamer, which launched in May, is in need of fresh content to face off against competitors like Disney+ and Netflix, the latter of which is far and away the winner of the ongoing streaming wars. HBO Max recently took this approach with Seth Rogen’s heartwarming comedy An American Pickle, picking up the rights to the film in April and launching it as one of its first original film release in early August. The Witches might be even better suited to a streaming release, neatly capitalizing off the start of spooky season and its deep bench of talent both in front and behind the scenes to glue people to their screens on October 22.
