Hink served as the official mascot until his retirement in 2013. He was succeeded by his nephew, Butler Blue II, who continued to uphold the tradition of representing the university with boundless energy and enthusiasm. Butler Blue II quickly became a well-known figure, earning a loyal following among students and fans alike.

Butler Blue III, aka “Trip”

With Blue II growing older and becoming senior in the breed, the Kings identified the only male in the litter of five born Dec. 23, 2011, to become Butler Blue III.

Butler Blue III, also known as “Trip,” was born Dec. 23, 2011, in Lizton, Ind., by breeders Frank and Jeanne King, owners of Kong King Kennel. Weighing just 13.5 ounces at birth, Blue III is an AKC registered male English Bulldog like his predecessors. He is distinguished by his red brindle and white markings passed on by his parents, Sire, Ch. Exact Classic Comet, and Dam, Kongs Sarah.

Trip was made his debut before a sellout crowd in Hinkle Fieldhouse prior to a men’s basketball game on Feb. 18, 2012.

Also of note, Blue III is the great-grandson of Ch. Cherokee Legend Rock, one of the nation’s winningest and most decorated English Bulldogs of the last decade and of all time. Fitting lineage, since Blue III worked closely with Blue II to learn the true art of being “America’s Dog” on and off the campus of Butler University. Now a recognized AKC Canine Good Citizen, Blue III has assumed the primary role of official mascot for Butler University.

Aptly nicknamed “Trip” (short for Triple, since he is the third mascot in succession), this red brindled, AKC-registered English bulldog also resides with the Michael Kaltenmark ’02, Director of External Relations, and his wife Tiffany. In addition, Blue III enjoys great care and support from Bark Tutor, City Dogs Grocery, Don Hinds Ford, Good Dog Hotel & Spa, Holistic Select, Nike, WellPet, and Dr. Kurt Phillips’ 92 of Mass Ave Animal Clinic and Fountain Square Animal Clinic.

Trip retired from active duty at the age of 8 on May 31, 2020, and took on an active role of Mascot Emeritus. With Trip’s retirement, Michael Kaltenmark relinquished full-time handler duties after 16 years of duty. Kaltenmark will continue his role at the university as Director of External Relations.

Reviews for "The Role of Mascots in College Athletics: A Case Study of Butler Blue"

1. Jack - ★☆☆☆☆
I was really disappointed with the Butler University mascot, Butler Blue. When I attended a basketball game, I was excited to see what the mascot could bring to the atmosphere. However, Blue seemed disinterested and lacked energy. It almost felt like he was just going through the motions and not engaging with the crowd. I think the university needs to find a more enthusiastic and engaging mascot to really boost the spirit of the fans.
2. Sarah - ★★☆☆☆
I have to say, I was not impressed with Butler Blue as the university's mascot. While I understand that the mascot is a live dog, I feel like it's not suitable for the role. The dog often seemed uncomfortable and didn't interact much with the crowd. Additionally, it was hard to see Blue from my seat due to the lack of visibility. I think Butler University should consider reevaluating their choice of mascot to enhance the overall experience for the fans.
3. Mike - ★★☆☆☆
As a student at Butler University, I must admit that I'm not a fan of Butler Blue as our mascot. While the idea of having a live dog as a mascot seems cute, it just doesn't work in reality. Blue often appears timid and scared, and it's difficult to get excited or rally behind such a mascot. I believe the university should consider adopting a more traditional and animated mascot that can generate more enthusiasm and support from the crowd.
4. Amanda - ★☆☆☆☆
I was so disappointed with the Butler University mascot, Butler Blue. The dog seems completely uninterested and detached from the games. It's as if Blue's presence is simply an obligation, not something that brings excitement and energy to the crowd. Additionally, I found it hard to connect with a live dog as a mascot because it lacks the human-like qualities that make mascots enjoyable. I hope the university realizes the impact a mascot can have and reconsiders their choice.
